Here are 3 videos that have been hacking my own thoughts about music. All of them have a distinctive non-western approach to melody, harmony and rhythm, and they are each incredibly catchy. My jazz training has given me a feeling that chord changes are "the bones" of a song, but the more I look outside of western music the more I realize how melodic and rhythmic exploration inside of more static harmonies can be deeply gratifying. I realize that many western musicians have explored modal music, but each of the examples below has a deep folkiness that is riveting and truly different than much of what I've heard. None of these songs feel like an experiment but rather a continuation of a musical tradition that has been in process for centuries (With the possible exception of some of Wu Man's extended techniques). The thing that is so interesting about all three of these pieces is that they each have a "hook." They all force me to reconsider what makes music enjoyable, addictive, and the extent to which computers have homogenized the sonic reach of popular music around the world. This is ironic because I actually believe that computers are supremely versatile instruments, however they allow for a laziness that can end up eliminating nuance. I do think that computers are creating music that helps us process our computerized lives (eg: dubstep), just as ancient music helped people understand pre-industrial life. But just as our use of technology might become more organic and integrated into our humanity so might our music. These musicians all have a lot of information about what music means for humanity.

Omnichord
Here's an improvisation I did on the very clumsy little beast that is Suzuki's Omnichord. This instrument is absurd, but a really fun to play...

John the Revelator - (Auto-Tuned)
I recently heard a radio show about Son House on NPR. This song just killed me so I went ahead and did my own updated version. Hope you like.

Try
Try is one of the most ridiculous songs I've ever written. But it is pretty fun to perform if we can remember all the words. Here's a video from our CD Release on May 20, 2011. Lyrics below.

Studio Recording Here
Try to tell the truth about how you feel
Try to take responsibility for your crappy life
Try to eat the seeds
Try not to peel the skin
Try to be in the place that you're already in.
Try a blind date
Try to get on TV
try a vigilante way of life
Try a poison ivy tea
try to go to mexico
make a rabbit out of wood
Try to get lost in your own neighborhood
Try to sing on the beat
try to talk to a cat
try to be authoritative
try to completely avoid trans-fat
try a robot broom
set it loose in your room
Try a passive aggressive tone with your family and friends
Try to go a week
without checking your mail
Try a business meeting on a raft
Try to fall in love with a whale
Try to bring it all home
Try a predatory loan
To to make a case for something you don't believe in
Try to start a farm
Try to take it like a man
Try to write a letter to the government
Try to live on Rasin Bran
Try to be the black sheep among the cows
Try to watch the olympics without being proud
Try to change your mind
about a person you hate

Try to make a mistake

Try Puerto rico as the 51st state

John Muther - Space Race
The Lisps played with John Muther twice in Milwaukee this year. Both times it was a joy. His songwriting is crafted so brilliantly. And he manages to talk about all the things I'm interested in just the way that seems to make sense. When I first heard is song Space Race, I was a believer.
Lyrics:
John Muther's Website
Lyrics:
As kids, on our hands and knees
Around the warm glow of the radio,
We wondered if the space men will wear sweaters.
Will they still eat food?
Will all food be pills?
Will they still tie their shoes?
Ray gun. Velcro.
Time moves too slow.
Rockets. Space camp.
Air locks. Mars man.
I'll take a shower of dust; I'll take a moon bath.
We need a thruster boost; we gotta go fast!
We have a duty to ourselves and our solar system
To spread our society.
We can show the other planets how to kill all the mosquitos,
And prevent each cloudy day.
Bug bomb. Smart bomb.
A bomb. H bomb.
Box top. Moon base.
Free prize. Space race.
We put our backs against the floor. We put our knees up on the couch.
We put our backs against the floor. We put our knees up on the couch.
Brushes steel. Plastic.
High sheen. High tech.
Longing for the
Wood floor. Wood stove.
Warm bed. Wool clothes.

This is a Tour, and We're On It.

DC: The Lisps tour started brilliantly. A humble but enthusiastic crowd.

Winston-Salem: On our way to Winston we got stuck in a 4 hour traffic jam because a fuel truck blew up and melted the pavement on I 95. We started going crazy so we took some pictures and wrote these poems:
Dear Molten Asphalt,
It’s brilliant that you’re here.
Waiting for us.
Maybe your liquidness is just a fancy dress.
Maybe your color is just a pose.
I hope to be with you at a later date.
We should meet.
I’ll wear red pants, and a sheathed knife on my belt.
I’ll bring you some old medicine bottles.
Hand blown.
I’ll always remember your love for any thing hand made.
I’ll bring you some flowers or more persistent plants,
Like grass or kudzu.
I miss you.
With Love, Cesar

dear advertising truck collie
you are bigger than most
collies. I fancy I can smell your breath.
It is a big breath, dense and wet.
I sink into it like a rickety pickup truck
Sinks into the molten highway.
Does the driver of your truck love you?
Where do you go when you slip
Into the upper hemisphere of your world?
I hope it is like the house of god in
There but less corrupt looking.
We’d be in Greensboro now
if I had done the booking.
Sincerely, jhoo

Dear Musical Station wagon,
The industrial musical revolution is taking place inside your engine block.
The industrial musical symphony is taking big breaths from a tin can in your heart.
Your industrial wheezing is a cacophony of bent steel and rusted upholstery
You look like one can bouncing between and rusted barrel and a broken slinky.
You are hotter than two robot mice making love in a tiny space ship hurdling towards the sun.
The industrial musical revolution is rising to its inevitable rattle trap apex just behind your burnt out left head light,
Keep up the good work,
Sincerely, a fellow musical Station Wagon.

Dear dead man who burned in the truck
On I 95.
Your white skin divides the lanes.
Your black shoes color the pavement
Maybe your hair sticks to the street like roadkill tail.
Or attaches itself to the branches on the trees like a bird’s nest.
Your mother loved you and so did we.
Love,
Sammy

Dear Little Debbie snacks,
You were only twentyfive cents.
Why?
Your chemical cotton fiber cream-filled sweet treats were on
The shelves too long, perhaps.
Were you waiting for us last night?
As you were in our lunch boxes nearly 20 years ago?
Twenty years ago and I can still remember what I ate for lunch.
How I ate you first, and then cleaned my teeth with carrot sticks.
You nourished us last night, and we thank you.
Love,
The Lisps

Tobacco town treated us quite well. Lots of beer, and beautiful people. Senryu rocked and Ear Pwr was amazing:

fan quote: "Winston is where asheville was 10 years ago"
Greensboro: My hometown, always so sweet. Green and gentle. We played outdoors for a lot of folks, some teenagers and babies. We played a show later that night with old and new friends.

fan quote: "This is the best live show I've heard in Greensboro in a long time, maybe ever. I'd buy a CD but I just spent all my money on some of that Latino food or whatever."
Band Quote: "The Lisps: Turning the strongest of men into women of medium strength"
Chapel Hill: We played a house show at The Family Room. Sweater Weather stole our hearts and fed 3/4 of us meat pie.
(video to come)
fan quote: "Your songs make me love myself"
band quote: "Sex messaging can wait"
Greenville: Greenville is a very strange little town, but the Spazzatorium Galleria is an amazing DIY piece of work. We talked to Ferocious Eagle who are truly ferociously good. (they're also friends with my secret crush Laura Gibson)
ferocious eagle:

next door to the spazzatorium:

band quote: "Country Doctor Museum"
band quote: "Greenville kind of looks like someone ate a college town and then barfed it back up"
Asheville: This was our first chance to really bond w/ Senryu we all made merry and drank and danced. This was also our first show that was um...sparsely attended....but we all went crazy dancing and playing. I took some sweet melodica solos with senryu. This might have be the most fun show ever.
Knoxville: Senryu's hometown is a tennessee dream. Electric Ballroom was a HUGE venue and we met many cute knoxvillians including Matgo Primo.
band quote: "Because you are You, you have the tendency to think that everyone else is also you"
Athens: Athens was a raging volcano of a success. Effie's Club Follies was so sexy that I had a stomach ache for 2 days. We ordered three huge pieces of mint chocolate chip cake and made ourselves sick.

here is a great gallery of our set and Shitty Candy
fan quote: "Ya'll are the nicest people ever"
Atlanta: Family BBQ during the day, where we played for our biggest fan: my Grammy. And then we raced off to play at the 11:11 tea house. This was a sleepy spot but the vibes were very nice and our pals magic apron were wonderful as always.
Senryu joined us for a rousing pepperspray hootenanny...but alas, after 6 shows together we had to bid farewell to our fine young friends. I filmed this before they left us:
senryu:

grammy:

New Orleans: It's worth noting that on the way to NOLA we stopped for lunch outside mobile, Alabama. We went in for Piccadilly Cafeteria, which was a childhood staple for me. I feel confident saying that this was a very disgusting culinary experience. Jeremy even suggested that we had actually died there and everything that happened in New Orleans was just part of the afterlife (which would explain our surreal experiences in America's most wonderfully bizarre city)
I think this picture will speak better to our new orleans experience than anything I could say:

After our show a Neutral Ground me and Sammy did a late night set at Mimi's which was a dream. Parisian waltzes dancing through old curtains and open windows.
Luke Winslow-King:

umm ladies?

I want to like The Pipettes...it's just...um
[pipettes at luna lounge 3/12/07]

1. Let's be clear...I have no prejudice for bands which seek to invoke the sublime and ineffable musical past.
2. I myself am in a band that does that very thing.
3. Maybe it's that I couldn't put my finger on anything new about their music.
4. costumes were great, hand motions and choreography was cute, but what's below the surface?
5. I'm all for cute. I love cute. But in order for me to give myself over to it, cute needs to be a vehicle for something more subversive, interesting, or unexpected.
6. Music Snobbery, in a moment of total un-snobbishness, said that last night all the jaded new yorkers left their cynical self-consciousness at home and let loose on the dance floor. er...I guess they all read that blog and got self-conscious again tonight.
7. There is something irritating about music that's inexorably happy and un-complicated. I just feel like I can't give myself over to something that seems like it has it's head in the clouds. I guess it's fine to be monochromatically sunshiney, but all the hemming and hawing from bloggers makes it seem like there should be much more to this music.
8. Am i like the Grinch trying to talk about Christmas?
9. Yes they are all beautiful and clearly talented musicians, but why should I go see them instead of drinking a beer at home and renting Grease? I wanted to find the answer to that and i didn't. The songs and choreography in grease are WAY better. But The Pipettes are better because ___________. (someone please fill in the blank)
One great thing about the night was I got my first chance to see the new Luna Lounge. Holy God what an amazing new venue. The sound was excellent, not ear bleedingly loud and the space is so huge. Kate of Mattison was there and everyone was very nice.
Maybe the pipettes are just playing it safe and cute so that they get super famous
and then they're going to blow everyone away with 6 hour psychedelic 3rd-wave feminist rock opera directed by Matthew Barney. Call me when that happens because I have a date with Greased Lightning.
Here's a shaky video of their last song (before encore) for you devotees and skeptics alike...Pull Shapes is their single and was definitely the most lively of the set:

Elvis Perkins: Quite Charming
When we Lisps walked into the studio up at Bard to start work on our new full length in January we found the admirable and brilliant Bob Beleicki mixing a dark yet bouncy and intensely catchy live recording/video by Elvis Perkins. What's amazing about this video is that the sound Bob got completely live in a house (with nearly all his mics hidden) is so much more vibrant than the actual single from the album. Unfortunately the youTube is a low quality compression but I still love it. That was the first I had heard of Mr. Perkins, and now he's everywhere.
enjoy the video...

Savoir Faire Pre-Game Part II:
Leah Hayes is a Scary Mansion

1. The thing about a real scary mansion is that it's terrifying, but ceaselessly intriguing.

2. If you ever actually visited the mansion, each room would be dimly lit. Strange but magnetic. There would be oddities and artifacts hanging on the walls and strewn about. Maybe they've been that way for decades. The stairways would be steep and the halls long and narrow, full of echo and must.

3. You might never actually work up the courage to visit the mansion but every time you drove by you'd slow down and imagine how scary it must be inside.
4. And though the mansion is up on the hill far away from your car, the mailbox is too close for comfort.

5. Maybe one night you drive by the mansion and see silhouettes of people dancing in the windows. Maybe they're just like everyone else. Or maybe they're just silhouettes?
Scary Mansion [mp3] - No Choice
6. Maybe you visit the mansion on a dare and you find the proprietor to be perfectly charming and well adjusted.
7. Maybe it looks like this.

Albert Hammond Jr. on Melodica?
There's been some blogging going on about strokes guy Albert Hammond Jr. going solo. And truthfully this topic is not that interesting to me...but in my daily regimen of watching melodica videos on youTube I happened upon this piece. How often do you see a video of a blog buzzed hipster rock star with only 1372 views? (and playing melodica?!)
You also might be wondering why I'm so into melodicas. I'll explain later I promise. Now's just not the time.
